Adding Skills to User Profiles

Adding Skills to User Profiles

Overview

Adding skills to user profiles is how learners begin their development journey in Learn Amp. Once skills are on a profile, learners can rate themselves, set targets, request manager feedback, and receive personalised content recommendations.

This article covers the different ways skills can be added to profiles—whether by learners themselves, through onboarding, via bulk import, or automatically through role assignments.

Functionality Breakdown

Ways to Add Skills

Learner Self-Selection
Learners can browse and add skills to their own profiles at any time. This empowers individuals to take ownership of their development.

Onboarding Flow
New users are prompted to select skills when they first join the platform. Featured skill categories appear during this flow, helping learners get started quickly.

Bulk Import
Admins can import skills to user profiles via CSV, useful for large-scale rollouts or aligning skills to organisational data.

Automatic Assignment via Roles
When Roles are configured with associated skills, and job titles are synced from your HRIS, skills can be automatically assigned based on a user's role.

Skill Rating Options

Once a skill is added, users can:

  • Self-rate – Assess their own proficiency level

  • Set a target – Define where they want to be

  • Request a manager rating – Get their manager's perspective

Pre-requisites

To add skills to user profiles, you'll need:

FAQs

Q: Can learners remove skills from their profile?
Yes, learners can remove skills they've added. However, any ratings associated with that skill will be preserved in historical data.

Q: What happens to skills during onboarding?
Featured skill categories are presented to new users during onboarding. Learners can select from these categories to build their initial skill profile.

Q: Can managers add skills to their team members' profiles?
Managers can rate their direct reports' skills, but they cannot add or remove skills on someone else's profile. Learners control which skills appear on their own profiles (unless skills are auto-assigned via Roles).

Q: How do auto-assigned skills work?
When Roles are configured with skills and linked to Job Titles, users automatically receive the skills associated with their Role. This happens when:

  • A new user joins and their Job Title matches a Role

  • An existing user's Job Title changes via HRIS sync

Q: Can users have both auto-assigned and self-selected skills?
Yes. Auto-assigned skills from Roles are added to the user's profile alongside any skills they've added themselves.

Q: How many skills should a user have?
There's no limit, but we recommend focusing on skills that are genuinely relevant to the user's role and development goals. A focused set of 10–20 skills is often more meaningful than a long list.

Troubleshooting

Solution

Issue

Solution

Can't find the Skills tab on profile

Ensure Skills is enabled on your account. Contact your Customer Success Manager if it's missing.

Skills not appearing in search

Check that the skill is enabled in Manage Skills. Disabled skills don't appear in search.

Auto-assignment not working

Verify the Role name exactly matches the Job Title in your HRIS. Check that the HRIS integration is syncing correctly.

Manager rating request not received

Confirm the manager relationship is set up correctly in the team structure. Check the manager's notification settings.

Skills from old role still showing

Auto-assigned skills persist even when Roles change. Users or admins may need to manually remove outdated skills.

Bulk import failing

Ensure your CSV format matches the template and user identifiers are correct.
